Winter

Central Texas snow, the morning after

Winter has come, briefly in Central Texas. We have enjoyed a taste of the kind of weather common to our good friends up north; snow and temperatures in the teens.   Our children love the snow as most children do, especially those who rarely experience this phenomenon. The snowfall came a week before Christmas. Our family was sitting around the wood stove, enjoying the comfortable warmth of the crackling fire. The kids were playing cards on the carpet, my wife and I were on the couch, reading or surfing the internet, I don’t remember which. Suddenly, my daughter exclaimed, “It’s snowing”.  Excitement filled the room and everyone got up and ran to the kitchen door to see if it was so. Snowflakes filled the air.

We watched in wonder and awe as our patio and yard became transformed before our eyes under a beautiful white carpet of wonderful, glorious, ethereal snow! Immediately, we all went outside to experience the cold, white, flakes firsthand. It was snowing heavily, at least that’s how we perceived it.  My youngest, Jesse, was wearing shorts and a shirt, but in his excitement and joy, was oblivious to the cold. He immediately ran out to the yard and proceeded to plop down in the white carpet and make a snow angel. The girls were running around the yard shouting with joy, letting out peals of laughter. A snowball fight ensued. This was too much fun, so I had to join in and we all had a grand time.

The obligatory snowman was dutifully formed, with charcoal eyes and a carrot nose. We were determined to make the most of this heavenly gift of winter weather. Of course, the kids were hopeful of several things; that the snow would continue, that they could go sledding, though our property was fairly flat so this would have been doubtful, and of course, that school would be canceled. Alas, none of these desires were fulfilled, as the “snowstorm” ended as quickly as it had begun. But for a brief time, we all enjoyed what it feels like to have a white winter, if only for less than a day.
